Guards and Ice: What They Do and Do Not Fix
Worth saying plainly: gutter guards do not cause ice dams, and they do not cure them either. Ice dams come from attic heat melting snow that refreezes at the cold eave. What guards do is keep the gutter itself clear, so meltwater that reaches the trough can actually drain instead of pooling against a plug of frozen leaves and adding to the problem. Common Questions
01 Will I ever have to clean my gutters again?
The trough stays clear, that is the point of the system and why we can put a lifetime clog-free guarantee behind it. We still suggest a look at valleys and downspout outlets every year or two, since debris can collect on top of any guard before it dries and blows off. If a guarded gutter ever clogs, we come clear it.
02 Which guard handles pine needles?
DoublePro. Its dual-membrane microfiltration stops needles that lie flat and thread through ordinary perforated guards. On the wooded lots around Coeur d'Alene it is our default recommendation, and it is the difference between a guard that works in pine country and one that just slows the clogging down.
03 Can gutter guards handle heavy snow and ice?

Usually, yes. Most seamless aluminum and box gutters in sound condition can take an Alu-Rex retrofit. We check condition and pitch first, because a guard on a sagging or badly pitched gutter locks in the problem. If the gutters are near the end of their life, we will show you the numbers for doing both at once.
05 What does certified installation actually get me?
